Release Notes PN 93000441 Digi EtherLite Configuration Utility (DgIpServ) Version 2.9.129.0 Software Package PN 40002241 04/28/2004 CONTENTS Section Description ------------------------------- 1 Introduction 2 Supported Products 3 Known Limitations 4 Additional Notes 5 History 1. INTRODUCTION This document describes the Digi EtherLite Configuration Utility (DgIpServ). With DgIpServ you can perform the following operations to configure your EtherLite device: o Store IP settings Choose Store IP settings to assign an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway to an EtherLite for the first time. Ask your network administrator for this information. o Erase IP settings Choose Erase IP settings to erase IP settings without assigning new ones. o Update Firmware Choose Update Firmware to apply an update you downloaded from the Digi Support Web site (http://support.digi.com). o Reboot Unit Reboot the EtherLite. Refer to the following number when searching the Digi International Inc. Web site (www.digi.com) or the FTP site (ftp.digi.com) for the latest software package: 40002241_ 2. SUPPORTED PRODUCTS Model Number of Ports -------------------------------------- EtherLite 2 2 EtherLite 8 8 EtherLite 16 16 EtherLite 32 32 EtherLite 80 8 EtherLite 160 16 EtherLite 162 16 3. KNOWN LIMITATIONS DgIpServ uses BOOTP/DHCP to configure the EtherLite and TFTP to download firmware. Normally, BOOTP/DHCP only works over the local network; so be sure that the EtherLite and the Windows machine running DgIpServ are on the same local network. With EtherLite RealPort firmware before version 1.5, other BOOTP/DHCP servers running on the same local network that might try to assign an IP address to the EtherLite will conflict with DgIpServ. If you have problems, turn off other BOOTP/DHCP servers on the local network. Also, EtherLite RealPort firmware before version 1.5 may not be able to change a saved configuration with DgIpServ. When the EtherLite has a saved configuration, the EtherLite sends out only one BOOTP request immediately after the Ethernet link comes up. If the hub or switch is slow in bringing up the link, that one BOOTP request can be lost. If you have this problem, try connecting the EtherLite to a different hub or switch. Cross over cables might not work; try a hub or switch, instead. You can also set or erase the EtherLite settings using the serial boot console rather than DgIpServ. EtherLite RealPort firmware version 1.5 has corrected some of these problems. It will give preference to DgIpServ over other BOOTP/DHCP servers on the network, so it will work with DgIpServ even if there are other BOOTP/DHCP servers. It also waits before sending out the BOOTP request to give slow hubs, switches, and cross over cable connections time to bring up the link. 4. ADDITIONAL NOTES 1. Unzip the archive to a folder of your choice. 2. Run DGIPCLN.CMD to remove previous versions of DGIPSERV. 3. Run DGIPSERV.EXE and follow the instructions on the screen. On-line help is available when you install the product. 5. HISTORY Version 2.9.129.0 -- Production release, Rev. C ---------------- April 28, 2004 o Added a separate screen and explicit instructions on when to turn the EtherLite off and back on. Added a "Finished." message when the configuration is done and the EtherLite is again in a safe state. Turning the EtherLite off at the wrong time can damage the device. o Added a screen to set the virtual port and optimization parameters. o Removed the "Change IP" option, since it was identical to "Store Settings". o Added help for all screens; updated help information. o The display window automatically scrolls so the latest messages are always visible. Also the display window text is no longer mistakenly highlighted. o Added periodic "Waiting..." messages while waiting for bootp. o Print a message when the new IP address is confirmed. o Improved error handling and error messages. o Errors during startup are now displayed; before they were lost because the display window was not ready. o Fixed both the "Erase Settings" and "Reboot Unit" options; before they failed to start up Windows sockets. o Improved the way DgIpServ works with older firmware versions. o Improved the way DgIpServ works with EtherLites that are already configured. For example, setting the same IP address that is already configured on the EtherLite is now ok; before this would hang DgIpServ. o DgIpServ now is given preference over other BOOTP/DHCP servers by the EtherLite. Version 2.5.67.0 -- Production release, Rev. B ---------------- August 7, 2002 o Fixed: After updating the firmware on any EtherLite with the DGIPSERV utility the Gateway and Subnet Mask are erased. o Fixed DGIPSERV issue with systems having multiple IP addresses (either because multiple Network Interface Adapters are installed or a VPN connection is established). Added a dialog that asks in this special case for the network interface to use. o Changed: The gateway address in DGIPSERV is set to 0.0.0.0 now, instead of clearing it upon dialog initialization. o Added support for the relay ip address (giaddr) in DHCP/BOOTP broadcast packets. o Fixed: After updating the firmware on any EtherLite with the DgIpServ utility the Gateway and Subnet Mask are erased. (#7727) o Fixed DGIPSERV issue with systems having multiple IP addresses (either because multiple Network Interface Adapters are installed or a VPN connection is established).(#7826) o Added DGIPCLN.CMD to remove previous version from the system. Version 2.4.46.0 -- Production release, Rev. A ---------------- April 4, 2002 o Initial release as stand-alone software package.
