Help for
Digi Port Authority - Remote (DPAR)
Monitor a device
- Select a device and a community and click "Monitor..."
- SNMP data will be displayed. Select the various tabs and buttons for more
detail.
Configure a device
- Select a device that has a Web User Interface and click
"Configure..."
- Launches the Web User Interface for the device in your default browser.
- It has a special function for devices with a 0.0.0.0 IP address: It
launches the IP address assignment dialog.
Options
- Select File->Options
- DPAR options can be viewed and set.
- Details about some of the options are listed below.
ADDP Discovery (Advanced Device Discovery Protocol)
- Allows the system to identify Digi devices attached to a network by
sending out a multicast packet. If a Digi device has ADDP it will respond to
the multicast packet and identify itself to the application sending the
multicast.
SNMP Discovery
- An SNMP agent must be running on your supported Digi device before you can
use DPA - Remote to discover it. The default broadcast address of
255.255.255.255 will not cross most gateways and routers. Select
File->Options->Discovery to specify an SNMP broadcast address to look
for devices outside the local subnet. For example: Network
192.168.0.0 with a subnet mask 255.255.224.0 would have a broadcast address
of 192.168.31.255
- Community - This setting acts as a password for the SNMP protocol.
Digi devices are shipped with the standard default community of
"public". Specify an alternate community if you have
reconfigured this setting on any of your devices. A device will not
respond to the SNMP request if the community is not correct.
ADDP Discovery vs. SNMP Discovery
- SNMP discovery may find Digi devices that do not have the ADDP protocol
(e.g. PortServer II).
- SNMP discovery may get responses from devices across subnets.
- ADDP discovery will find devices without SNMP or with SNMP disabled.
Monitoring a device such as this with DPAR will not be possible, but most
Digi devices have a Web User Interface. Use the
"Configure..." button to access the Web UI.
Name Resolver
- Performance on Microsoft Windows operating systems may be improved by
going to File > Options > General and deselecting Enable Name Resolver.
Devices without DNS host names may slow down the data processing. If all
Digi devices on the network are assigned host names on your DNS server, you
can enable the name resolver with no adverse effects.
IP Assignment
When a device is discovered with a 0.0.0.0 IP address you can use DPAR to
assign a valid IP address and network settings:
- File->Options->Discovery. Select "Enable ADDP
discovery". Click OK.
- Discover devices.
- Select a device with an IP address of 0.0.0.0, then click
"Configure...". You must assign a valid IP address to a device
before it can be monitored with DPA - Remote.
