INTRODUCTION This document describes the device driver that supports the Digi devices listed below. The driver is for use in the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP environments. Refer to the following number when searching the Digi International Inc. Web site (www.digi.com) or the FTP site (ftp.digi.com) for the latest software package: 40002164_ 2. KNOWN LIMITATIONS The driver does not support software flow control characters (Xon and Xoff) set to null (0x00). The driver does not support IOCTL_SERIAL_XOFF_COUNTER. If one plans to use the RealPort driver with serial printers, one has to reboot the system after device installation or after renaming ports to see the new ports listed in the Print Spooler's list of available ports for printing. This is a known limitation of the Print Spooler, which does not detect changes in the list of available ports automatically. 4. UPGRADING REALPORT UPGRADING FROM AN ETHERLITE DRIVER ---------------------------------- If one has previously installed the EtherLite driver for an EtherLite device (EtherLite 2/8/16/32/80/160/162), please follow these necessary steps to upgrade to the current RealPort driver: a. Uninstall the old EtherLite driver and reboot the system. b. Update the EtherLite firmware using the DGIPSERV utility, which is included in the driver package. One can download the latest firmware files from the Digi Support Web site, http://support.digi.com. c. Install the new RealPort driver. UPGRADING IN WINDOWS 2000 ------------------------- To upgrade a previously-installed RealPort driver to the new driver, please follow these steps. Note that the "Update Driver" functionality available via the Device Manager is not supported -- instead, one must first uninstall the existing RealPort driver and then install the new RealPort driver: a. First, navigate to the Device Manager to uninstall the the old RealPort driver for each device that is using it: o From the Desktop, right-click on "My Computer" o Select "Manage" o In the left-hand side of the Computer Management window, select "Device Manager" Next, uninstall a device: o In the right-hand side of the window, expand the category entitled: "Multi-port serial adapters" o Right-click on the RealPort device to uninstall o Choose "Uninstall" o Click "OK" Be sure to uninstall each RealPort device so that the old RealPort driver is completely removed. b. Next, run the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard, located at Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware, and do the following: o Click "Next >" o Select "Add/Troubleshoot a device" o Click "Next >" o Wait while the Wizard searches for new plug-and-play compliant hardware o If no new plug-and-play hardware is found, the Wizard displays the "Choose a Hardware Device" screen o Select "Add a new device" o Click "Next >" o Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" o Click "Next >" o Select "Multi-port serial adapters" o Click "Next >" o Click "Have Disk..." o Enter the path to the new RealPort driver files or click "Browse" to browse for the directory o Click "OK" o Choose the appropriate RealPort device from the list o Click "Next >" o Click "Next >" again c. Windows will display a "Digital Signature Not Found" message, explaining that the driver is not signed. Click "Yes" to continue the installation. One may see several of these warnings -- simply click "Yes" for each message to proceed with installation. d. Follow any other instructions to complete the installation. e. Repeat steps b. through d. once for each device to be reinstalled. UPGRADING IN WINDOWS XP ----------------------- The steps needed to upgrade the device driver in Windows XP are similar to those steps needs to upgrade the driver in Windows 2000. a. First, navigate to the Device Manager to uninstall the the old RealPort driver for each device that is using it: o Open the Start menu o Right-click "My Computer" o Select "Manage" o In the left-hand side of the Computer Management window, select "Device Manager" Next, uninstall a device: o Expand the "Multi-port serial adapters" category o Right-click on the RealPort device to uninstall o Choose "Uninstall" o Click "OK" Be sure to uninstall each RealPort device so that the old RealPort driver is completely removed. b. Next, run the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard, located at Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware, and do the following: o Click "Next >" o Select "Add/Troubleshoot a device" o Click "Next >" o Wait while the Wizard searches for new plug-and-play compliant hardware o If no new plug-and-play hardware is found, the Wizard displays the "Choose a Hardware Device" screen o Select "Add a new device" o Click "Next >" o Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" o Click "Next >" o Select "Multi-port serial adapters" o Click "Next >" o Click "Have Disk..." o Enter the path to the new RealPort driver files or click "Browse" to browse for the directory o Click "OK" o Choose the appropriate RealPort device from the list o Click "Next >" o Click "Next >" again c. One may see several of these warnings -- click "Continue Anyway" for each message to continue the installation. d. Follow any other instructions to complete the installation. e.
